Nikah (Marriage)
Masjid-E-Quba offers a Nikah service for those who wish to get married according to Islamic Law.
Nikah is a sanctified social contract between bride and groom. It is a highly encouraged practice in Islam, so much so that the beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) declared marriage to be half of one’s faith.
Moreover, the Holy Qur’an states:
‘And among His signs is that He created spouses for you from yourselves for you to gain rest from them, and kept love and mercy between yourselves; indeed in this are signs for the people who ponder’ (Ar-Room, 30:21).
Certainly, there are great blessings in marriage and it is a joyous occasion for all those involved.
Nikah Procedure
- Obtain a Nikah form – You can do this by visiting the Masjid where a member of the management committee will provide you with a form. Alternatively, you can email us with the subject ‘Nikah form’ and we will happily assist you.
- Once the form has been submitted, a member of the management committee will verify it (see documents required). Please note the Nikah fee (£100) must be submitted together with the Nikah form.
- Upon receipt of the necessary documentation and when all other requirements have been met, we will confirm the Nikah ceremony.
The following documentation is required for the Nikah:
- Photo ID: One valid ID per spouse (e.g. Passport or UK Driving License, if one or either do not have an EU Passport then proof of Visa will be required)
- Proof of Address: Must be a UK permanent address (e.g. Utilities bill or Bank Statement dated within the last three months)
- Birth Certificate: For each spouse – If names have changed, you must also provide a legal Deed Poll
- Divorcees: Decree Absolute and Islamic Divorce documents
- Widow/Widower: Former spouse’s Death certificate
- Miscellaneous: If one or both partners are converts to Islam, a letter or certificate is required from the person who conducted their Shahada
To ensure a smooth and seamless process, it is advisable that the Nikah is booked at least three weeks prior to the planned date. Please note that the summer months are an especially busy time for Nikah ceremonies, so please book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Please Note:
All of the documents listed above MUST be original documents. Also, this is a general overview. If we require further information, we will ask you for it. The Masjid will also retain a copy of each document for its own records
The Nikah ceremony may be performed at any suitable location of choice; however it will be conducted by the Masjid Imam. You may state a preferred time but we cannot guarantee it, though we will endeavour to accommodate your request as best as possible
We reserve the right to refuse to hold a Nikah ceremony (you will be informed of the reasons for doing so, if applicable)
The Nikah fee is non-refundable
Though not immediately binding, it is recommended that the Mahr (Dowry) is presented on the day of Nikah; however this is at your discretion
You will need to have a separate civil ceremony at a local register office in order to legally validate your marriage
It is YOUR responsibility to:
Ensure that all documents are original, of good quality and are produced before the Nikah
Bring two male witnesses at the time of Nikah. It is essential that the witnesses are reliable and of good character, easily traceable and are unbiased witnesses to the Nikah. You must also provide representation from the bride (Wakil) who will be present at the Nikah. Please note that the witnesses and Wakil must also provide photo ID for verification
Present yourself and any other guests in good time. If the Nikah is kept in the Masjid, you must maintain respect at all times
Nikah Certificate
Masjid-E-Quba provides a certificate for the Nikah upon conclusion of the solemnisation service. This certificate acts as written proof of the lawful Islamic relationship between Husband and Wife.
There will be three copies of the certificate signed by all parties. One copy each will be given to the newlyweds and one copy will be kept by the Masjid for its records.
It is important you retain this certificate, as you may need it in the future (e.g. if you go to perform Hajj/Umrah, the certificate can prove a Nikah exists between yourselves; especially as surnames are usually different at the time of Nikah).
Please note that due to legal requirements, the names on the photo ID will be the names that will be written on the Nikah certificate. We will not write any other names.
Furthermore, in the event of any wrongdoing on your behalf, Masjid-E-Quba reserves the right to retrospectively declare the marriage certificate null and void. If necessary, we will also inform the relevant legal authorities.
